Midlife Mind Munsters and Head Gremlins

Fear has been on my mind this week.

I had the most magnificent session of Kundalini Yoga on Thursday night; focused around letting go of that which no longer serves us. Prolonged poses that included Breath of Fire. It’s a funny wee beast is the bold Breath of Fire (BoF) and it’s taken me a while to get the gist - but I think I may have finally got it licked it this week.

BoF involves active exhales though the snoz or mouth that are quick and powerful, whilst the inhalation is passive by-product of the super fast out breath. It’s associated with stress relief and is said to be rather nifty for respiratory health, concentration, and mindfulness. Which makes sense as the breath itself is all consuming. We were invited to bring our focus to something that we wish to let go of, that no longer serves us.

My mind immediately went to Fred Fear.

It’s a companion through much of our life; and genuine fear can be life enhancing. It might make us pause before we step onto that road, head down that dark alleyway or stop before we give our personal details away to a suspicious caller. An in-built safety system; but the wiring needs a bit of work. But the day to day sneaking, surreptitious, meddling fear is not our friend.

  • Fear of forgetting something important

  • Fear of making a mistake

  • Fear of not being good enough

  • Fear of standing out

  • Fear of being too good and dear God in Govan, then what!

Those fears are not our charitable companions.

O No. They hold us back, cut us down, make us shrink and prevent us from unfolding into our most magnificent selves.

They are debilitating, depleting and quite honesty boring as hell.

In clinic these little head gremlins would often appear when clients were getting in and amongst their diet and lifestyle change. Laid down in our younger years, often from a seemingly arbitrary comment - we can end up giving them far more power than they truly deserve. And of course it is always so much easier to believe the bad stuff isn’t it?

I found Heart Math and EFT hugely helpful for this and have had a number of powerful sessions where we have sent the Miserable Mind Munsters packing with the most tremendous effect. People suddenly realising that they no longer need to keep feeding these untruths. It is like the mist lifts and clarity and reason prevail.

But on my mat on Thursday night I felt a huge release as I outstretched my arms, powered through my breath and just wholeheartedly relinquished some dusty, old fears that are taking up space.

Banished. Gone. Evaporated. Sent Packing.

I felt lighter and buoyant in this bold release.

It made me wonder - how many of us are held back by the skittery Head Gremlins and Mind Munsters? How often have we not taken that natural next step, challenged ourselves a little more and boldly put ourselves out there?

And with what consequences?

What if we did in fact recognise the Mind Munsters for the porky-tellers they are?

Because in many a case the worst we will hear is “no” or “not yet” or “not for me”.

If you are ready to send those pesky Head Gremlins and Mind Munsters packing; reach out and book a call today.
