The role of EFT in managing depression and anxiety in Menopause.

Peri-menopause offers a myriad of different symptoms and experiences and as such I believe we need a veritable bulging toolkit to keep us company across this midlife journey.

There is no one, simple solution.

But EFT may offer a bright, shiny new (but old) solution.

Along with changes to support diet, sleep and intentional movement we can access other techniques to manage some of the more challenging symptoms. Our plummeting progesterone levels accompanied with the steady decline in Oestrogen can impact our mental health and it is recognised that postmenopausal women may be at greater risk of depression.

EFT has been studied within clinical trials. In fact one such study involved 88 women with mild to moderate depression in Iran. The female subjects were randomly assigned evenly between two groups. One group were trained in EFT whilst another accessed a sham therapy. Women in the EFT group accessed two sessions of training and encouraged to maintain this daily for 8 weeks. The Women completed the validated "Beck Depression Inventory" before and after the intervention.

Meanwhile the "control" group received training on sham acupressure points similar to the intervention group.

At the end of the study depression scores from the EFT group were halved and the frequency of moderate depression decreased from 56.8 to 9.35%. In total, 63.4% of the EFT group were free of depression.

This is a phenomenal result and unsurprisingly the researchers suggested that using EFT for 8 weeks could significantly reduce the mean score of depression in postmenopausal women and recommend using this method in public health centres for postmenopausal women.

This study replicates results I have seen time and time again within my own clinic.
